Kalamazoo Arab-Americans Aren't Celebrating

(KALAMAZOO, MI) (2003-11-22) Members of the Kalamazoo American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee held an iftar, the dinner that marks the end of fasting during Ramadan, on Friday. It's usually a time of celebration for Muslims. But ADC director Ali Labib says anti-Arab discrimination gives the local community little to celebrate. He says the community has suffered since the September 11th attacks two years ago and has been under attack because of the federal government's war on terrorism. Labib says Arab Americans just want the same constitutional rights enjoyed by everyone else. Local and federal officials also attended the iftar at Western Michigan University. Labib says he will meet with them again in the next two weeks to try to improve relations between them and Arab-American residents. There are about three thousand American Arabs living in the greater Kalamazoo area.
