Martin Luther King, Jr. Award’s Event a Success

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) in Michigan extends its heartfelt appreciation to the ADC members, friends, Program Committee, volunteers and supporters who helped make the 6th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Award’s Dinner at the Bint Jebail Cultural Center in Dearborn on January 27, 2005 a success.

A highlight of the evening, which hosted an audience of 500 guests, including elected officials, key government representatives, students, educators, and prominent community members, was the keynote address by Executive Director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) Wade Henderson, who traveled from Washington, DC to take part in the event.  Henderson focused his remarks on the past struggles of the African American community and the current challenges facing Arab Americans.  He went on to talk about the importance of brotherhood, unity and facing these challenges together as one community.  Other highlights from the event included the award’s presentation to the ten high school scholarship recipients and special performances by the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts and the Riverside Middle School Choir.

Among the many distinguished guests at the event, were Congressmen John Dingell and John Conyers, Senator Irma Clark Coleman and representatives from the offices of Senator Carl Levin, Senator Debbie Stabenow and Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano.  ADC Michigan extends its greatest appreciation to this year’s event partners, Ford Motor Company and Qatar Petroleum and sponsors, including DaimlerChrysler, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Life for Relief and Development, DTE Energy, The Pepsi Bottling Group, VITEC, Fairlane Town Center, Southgate Computers, Huntington National Bank Comerica Bank, the Arab American and Chaldean Council, the Lebanese American Heritage Club and the Arab American News.

ADC would be remiss, if it did not pay special gratitude to the volunteers that make up the MLK Program Committee, who commit their time and resources into this project.  Their dedication to the project and to our younger generation is unparalleled.  Special thanks to Lila Alcodray Amen, Suehaila Amen, Karim Bitti, Danene Charles, Dr. Amal K. David, Siham Awada Jaafar, Ikram Khalid, Maysoon Khatib, Ana Marie Ulloa, Warren Hollier and Wisam Kazaleh Sirdenis.
